Policy

It is the policy of Tacoma Community College that non-represented classified employees and hourly employees will be allowed a 15-minute rest period for each four (4) hours of work to be taken in accordance with WAC 296-126-092. Rest periods will be scheduled as near as possible to the midpoint of the work period. Where the nature of the work allows employees to take intermittent rest periods equivalent to 15 minutes for each four hours worked, scheduled rest periods are not required.

Rest periods may not be combined together with meal periods or used to arrive late or leave early or otherwise vary the scheduled work shift.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish rest periods for non-represented classified staff and hourly employees covered by civil service rules.

This policy applies to non-represented classified staff covered by civil service rules and hourly employees.

Definitions

Classified Service Employee: an employee employed on a full-time or less than full-time basis and who meets the definition of a classified employee under the provisions of RCW 41.06.

Hourly Employee: an employee employed for less than 1050 hours in any 12-month period and who is exempt from classified service due to the number of hours worked.
